Photography Advice From A Friend

by Bill

A good photographer friend of mine and I were recently discussing the issue of creative burnout. Namely, how does one make sure not to lose perspective, getting overly caught up in technique and post-processing and general business-of-photography wizardry? Our solution was to strip away all the extraneous stuff and just start seeing photographically again.

To that end, my friend gave me a challenge: shoot an object 1″x1″, without any dramatic lighting, softboxes or special effects of any kind. I pondered for a bit, and looked around the room–engaged in seeing, and not much else. Then it hit me: the perfect solution.

Bullseye

A bull’s eye, I suppose it was. The ideal solution to a simple seeing problem.

It made me think that this solution could work for all sorts of challenges. When you get a little caught up, a little overwhelmed by all the nuances of doing whatever it is you do, strip away all the excess and get back to the basics. Even if it’s just for a few minutes. It’s a helpful exercise, and it can get you back… on target.
